PROBLEM STATEMENT

Student feedback reports:

“the

unfamiliarity of technology comes up again

and again

…”

(Glover, 2012).

Internet penetration: 10.6% in South African rural areas and 27.8% in urban

areas (Stat SA, 2015).

Limited studies address university students from rural backgrounds in terms

of their technological literacies (Czerniewicz & Brown , 2014).

A rural background may have negative impact but at the same time

preparedness of institutions to accommodate such students is sometimes

questionable (REAP, 2008:6, in Brits et al., 2015).

The problem is that technological transitions are often ignored by

universities as most assume that all students have background knowledge

or experience with technological devices.
