A possible way ahead for Higher Education Development
(cont.)
•
Intriguing possibilities in new bodies arising because of the student protests
•
Somewhat ironically, student success has moved up the agenda for material
reasons: the need for national loan recipients to complete their studies and find
well-remunerated work so that they can repay their loans
•
New schemes and national bodies that are emerging as a result of the major
changes in student funding
–
particularly the Ikusasa Student Financial Aid
Programme (ISFAP)
–
are thus planning initiatives to boost student performance.
•
These plans hold interesting developmental possibilities but there are major
pitfalls. Cooperation with them by education development bodies would have
advantages for all parties.
•
State bodies, particularly the DHET and the CHE
•
Given that the DHET, in association with the statutory CHE, has the power to bring
about substantial change, it is critical that the Higher Education Development
community should prioritise ongoing engagement with it
•
with a view to providing scholarly input and developmental experience,
advocating positive change, and helping to shape the national educational
development agenda
