Implications for the nature of work in Higher Education Development

It is hoped that this analysis has indicated ongoing and new challenges

and responsibilities for the field of higher education development in South

Africa, as well as opportunities for significantly influencing the system

Engaging with these has implications for the nature of educational

development work in the SA context; for example, willingness to:

become involved in areas of sector-wide work on top of regular institutional

responsibilities

undertake ongoing groundwork with national bodies, including serving on

committees, task teams and working groups, making written contributions

and policy proposals, and interpreting relevant research literature

undertake research-for-policy, as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis

as a basis for proposing or shaping developmental interventions.

Perhaps the most valuable element of this work is to influence dominant

traditional cultures and values by changing what the sector sees as

important
