HIGH IMPACT EDUCATIONAL

PRACTICES (HIPs)

HIPs are a collection of

active

and

intentional

learning opportunities that can

occur throughout the undergraduate experience in the curricular and co-

curricular space that adds to students’ cumulative learning (Dean, 2015: 27)

HIPs has been widely tested and proven to

contribute significantly to

students’ engagement, learning and retention in higher education

(Kuh,

2008; Finley & McNair, 2013; Finley & Kuh, 2016).

Linda Suskie proposes a list of quality dimensions for particular out-of-class

experiences to qualify as co-curricular HIPs, namely

focus

,

relevance

,

community

,

evidence

, and

betterment

(2015:7).
