What do we mean by FYE?
The first year of students at university has many transitions that can
overwhelm and defeat students if not managed by the university and
by the students.
Universities put programs in place to manage the transitions so that students are
not too stressed and quit, but are successful academically and socio-culturally.
Generally called the First Year Experience Programs these programs take many
forms in different universities and have evolved substantially over time.
When extended to all students these are known as the overall student
experience programs.
They are the university’s response to the escalating pressures on students that
limit the degree to which they cope with transitions to the new life and studies.
They generally address academic, social, economic, cultural and other issues that
have the potential of stressing students and result in student failing to perform
academically as well as succeeding socio-economically and culturally.
