Motivation
■ First year experience program started last year at Unisa and it
is conducted by Student Retention Unit with a cooperation of
various colleges and departments.
■ The main task of this program is to improve the student
retention via an application of a number of processes, like the
early alert, students profiling and referral modelling.
■ Some of its deliverables are strategies to enhance student
success.
■ One of such strategies can be the set of interventions
directed towards the most troublesome parts of the
curriculum: the threshold concepts.
■ The threshold concept project was initiated after the students
attending programming workshop gave a list of topics and
asked for explanation. All the topic were the threshold
concepts.
