Page Background

•

Although some of the contextual factors had the potential to undermine

the orientation programme it was not helpful to place it as negative

factors since our students, and we as practitioners, will continually be

exposed to such realities.

•

This suggests a choice of responding to the dynamics of the changed

and changing HE landscape (

sixth P, Politics

) within reasonable

boundaries and to the best of our ability, however, taking into

consideration best practices.

•

Therefore, the response is to ensure that the development, design and

delivery of the orientation programme as a sub-environment of the FYE

enhances first year students’ transition to and integration with their new

community of higher learning, and that it supports their learning needs

in contemporary HE.
