Attrition and Retention at Unisa

• Previous cohort analyses have

highlighted a high (40-50%) and

in some cases very high (above

60%) first-year dropout rates

(ibid).

• These coupled with low (10-15%)

and very low (6%) completion

rates within the time period set by

the Admissions Policy, mean that

Unisa is not well placed within

the context of student success

(Barnes, 2015; Barnes & Van Zyl,

2014).

• The results of the cohort of

2007-2012 first-time entry

recorded 41, 4% of first-year

dropout rate across the

institution.

• These results were higher than

the 3-year UG Certificates/

Diploma (41.1%), 3-year General

Bachelor Degrees (29, 1%), the

3-year Professional Bachelor

Degrees (24, 5%), and the 4-year

Professional Bachelor Degrees

(29, 4%) (ibid).
